The 7 Habits of Highly Stylish People

Here’s a fact: Anyone with a credit card can stroll into Malls and emerge looking like Fashion with a capital F. But here’s another one: Very few people—credit cards or not—can be considered women of genuine style.

Yes, draping yourself in the coolest labels and piling on “It” items might give you a boost of instant sartorial gratification, but in six months those pieces will be obsolete, you’ll be out a month’s rent, and you’ll feel compelled to keep up with the cycle of buying the next round of coveted pieces. Exhausting! Still, so many women seem to be falling victim to that exact cycle.

Blame it on today’s street style-obsessed world, but all we have to do today is take a quick peek at Pinterest, give Instagram a quick scroll, or visit any one of the gazillion personal style blogs that exist, and we’ll be inundated with up-to-the-minute images of Céline, Proenza Schouler, Givenchy, Chanel, and other top-level labels, which can often create a bit of FOMO. And that, in turn, can result in scores of young women looking, well, exactly like everyone else and going broke in the process.

Then, however, there are those images you’ll see on blogs or street style sites of women who look so amazingly chic, cool, or interesting
who aren’t covered in head-to-toe labels, but rather know how to take nondescript pieces and style them in such a way that their whole look is completely enviable and covetable.

These, friends, are the truly stylish women from whom we should aim to take our fashion inspiration. To that end, we’ve compiled the 7 habits of highly stylish people to get you started.

1. They don’t surf street style blogs and copy exactly what they see, label for label.
In this day and age, street style photos are a bona fide source of fashion inspiration. In fact, we spend a pretty hefty portion of our day
stalking Pinterest and culling various galleries to offer our readers (and ourselves) great ideas when it comes to seasonal outfits.

However, just because you saw Marian RiveraNadine Ilustre, or Heart Evangelista draped in VersaceChanel, or D&Gor because you’ll be in New York during Fashion Week and want to get snapped by Phil Oh—isn’t a great reason to go out and splurge on the same stuff.
Don’t forget: Several big street-fashion players, editors, and bloggers get sent designer stuff for free to entice folks like us to go out and buy it. Others are, well, richer than us and it’s their day job to flit around the world in the latest designer clothes, which is fun to admire but not necessarily healthy to emulate.

That’s why truly stylish girls will see a look they’re drawn to and seek out lesser-priced pieces that have the same vibe. Plenty of affordable stores and sites offer items that feature similar aspects to designer pieces.

2. They aren’t afraid of any store—and can find something almost anywhere.
Legitimately stylish women will troll any—and we mean any—store with zero snob factor, yet they manage to stay true to their aesthetic.

For example, she won’t be afraid to pop into a cheesy-seeming teen store at the mall, but that doesn’t mean she’ll leave with the same things her 12-year-old cousin would. Same goes for fast-fashion haunts like Forever 21, dusty old thrift stores (ukay-ukay), and off-price havens like the Department Stores, 268 Malls and Divisoria, which are consistently packed with great stuff at non-sucker prices.

3. They know how to style themselves according to their own taste.
Isn’t it always the case that the most stylish girls will say “This blouse? It’s from Ukay-ukay, like, 100 years ago” and actually mean it?

Yeah, the blouse itself is probably pretty cool, but it’s really the way she styled it—maybe she tucked into great-fitting jeans, unbuttoned one extra button, rolled up the sleeves, and added a killer pair of statement earrings—that made everyone comments on it.

4. They always look a littles less “done” than everyone else.
Highly stylish people are often in the habit of always appearing a
teeny tiny bit too cool for every scenario they’re in.

This might mean wearing a pair of slip-on sneakers when every other girl is teetering on sky-high heels, wearing a chic skinny pantsuit when every other woman is rocking glittery party dresses, or chopping her hair into a messy bob when everyone else has long beach waves. Small things that always make them look a little less “done.”

5. They understand labels don’t make them cooler.
It sounds cliché, but the most stylish women—and men, for that matter—in the world are ones who have confidence, and who know they don’t need the 2,000PHP sweatshirt or 20,000PHP handbag to make themselves appear cool.

These folks can step out in a faded grey tee and jeans and still look like the coolest person in the room all because they have confidence (okay fine, and probably a killer haircut, too.)

6. They aren’t slaves to fashion.
Some of the most stylish people are able to have fun with fashion and follow trends without looking like a slave. If you don’t like a trend—even if every blogger under the sun is wearing it—don’t buy into it. It’s that simple.

7. They don’t dress to be considered stylish.
Before blogs, before street style, and before Fashion Week became a three-ring circus that only matters for those who have the most attention-grabbing clothing, young women dressed for themselves, their lifestyle, and what looked good on them.

It doesn’t matter if those heels are Alexander Wang—if you can’t walk in them, you won’t be considered stylish. Throw on a pair of comfortable ankle boots with that mini dress, you’ll look much cooler.

THE TOP 10 TRENDS OF FALL WINTER 2015 READY TO WEAR

From big belts and fun furs to cool capes and sexy lingerie, the fall/winter 2015 season was filled with covetable clothing. And thanks, Wes Anderson, for inspiring so many fashion designers to get their quirk on.

BIG BELTS
Ladies, yes, it’s that time once again, to accentuate the waist with big bold belts. Although designers didn’t go up to “boxing championship belt” dimensions this season, they did draw the eye to the midriff to build hourglass shapes, create a color contrast or just make an outfit look that much more bad ass.

CAPES
A trend that just will not go away, capes were back on the catwalk in a big way this season. Valentino has always made a strong argument for this classy, yet sometimes cumbersome outerwear. But this time some of the best, and perhaps most user-friendly, options came down the Michael Kors runway. If you can pull them off, capes are great statement alternatives to coats when the weather is mild enough to enjoy them.

LINGERIE
Underwear as outerwear is not a new fashion concept. But it certainly was highly desirable this season. At Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière’s sporty take on the style looked fresh, while Dolce & Gabbana once again proved they know how to work black lace like nobody’s business. Come next season, being caught “undressed” will be the height of sexy sophistication.

ATHLEISURE
The colliding worlds of casual clothing and tailoring have created a new fashion star — Athleisure. A number of up-and-coming brands like Paco RabannePublic SchoolCedric Charlier and Carven all made very strong arguments that this niche has a lot of cool room to grow. Expect more from this trend in the next spring/summer season as further fashion houses explore the style.

FUN FUR
Winter collections = fur. And there were a lot of interesting furs on the catwalk in all four fashion capitals. The color-washed take at Dior gave traditional fur coats a new appeal. The playful pompons at Celine certainly caught the eye, and Fendi always knows how to deliver when it comes to crafting creative pelt options. But a shout-out needs to be given to designersStella McCartney and Ralph Lauren. Both of them fooled quite a few fashion veterans with their faux fur options. Once again making a strong argument for choosing a fur alternative next season.

PLEATS
Pleats are a tried-and-true trend. But this time the wide variety of pleated skirt, pant and top options was what made the style stand out. From fan to box or carwash and knife, the pleat look packed quite a punch on runways as diverse in aesthetic as Balmain and Kenzo to Guy Laroche and Marco de Vincenzo.

PATCHWORK
A holdover from the spring/summer 2015 season, the patchwork look once again was a designer favorite. The splicing and dicing of furs, denim, knitwear motifs and snakeskin showed just how powerful the juxtaposition of colors, textures and fabrics could be. But this is a style that should be worn with caution. Too much clashing in one look can be sartorial overkill.

WES ANDERSON
The Wes Anderson effect on designers this season was self-evident on a number of catwalks. And many a mood board featured stills from the director’s distinctive oeuvre. Veronica Etroeven name-checked him as someone who inspired her strong signature collection.  She was in good company with brands like Gucci, Bally and Lacoste also diving into the odd and adorable Anderson universe for inspiration.

RIBBED KNITWEAR
If there was one phrase written down in fashion critics’ notebooks more than any other this season it is arguably ribbed knitwear. The forgiving and comfy weave was everywhere. But again, never worn or styled the same way twice. This corrugated clothing is a wardrobe staple. And with so many great options to choose from (NeheraLouis VuittonCalvin Klein,Sacai), it’s time to invest in some new knits.

                                                   STATEMENT SHOES
No fashion roundup of trends would be complete without a look at the always inventive footwear that designers offer up die-hard fashionistas each season. This time they were treated to furry boots, crystal-covered heel-less heels, pink pompons on silver sandals and sexy knee-high black lace-up boots, just to name a few. This selection is only a handful of all the kooky and original shoes that were displayed, designs that always make fashion a feast for the eyes…and feet!

Stylist Life...

And since I took Styling workshop at School of Fashion and Arts last Summer. I have decided to do Fashion Blogginf, to enhance my skills and also to learn more about the industry. I guess by doing this, I will be able to update myself with the current trends. What is "IN" and "OUT" and of course what is "HOT" and "NOT".

Feel free to add up if you have further suggestions. I'll try to do fashion globally though I want to focus more here in the Philippines for now. I'll be a Fashion Paparazzi...

If you would like to see my works kindly check my FB page: GutStyled and my IG account JustGaps. You can also hire me for prenup and debut styling for photoshoots and as well as if you need wardrobe suggestions and Editorial shoots.
